REVIEW: Shrove Tuesday at Toa Payoh

Decided on heading to Shrove Tuesday for dinner. I remembered eating there long time ago but could not remember how their food taste like!

Quote from their website
Long ago, Shrove Tuesday is a day for feasting and having a good time! People flock to churches to confess the bad things they had done and would be ‘shriven’ or forgiven before the start of Lent (a period before Easter). Because rich food such as eggs, butter and milk were forbidden during Lent, one way of using them up would be to make, in our case, awesome Waffles, Pastries and Ice Cream!
The name Shrove denotes a period of cleansing, wherein a person brings their lusts and appetites under subjection through abstention and self-sacrifice. Nowadays, Shrove Tuesday has evolved into a day of frivolity and indulgence, during which people participate in as much pleasure and self-gratification as they can before Lent begins!
This is where they derive their name from.

Anyways i noticed that they do sell main dishes as well but their choices are limited! Do hope that they can include more dishes.  If you read the above quote, you can see that they listed that they are selling AWESOME waffles, pastries and ice cream! They do have different kinds of cakes, macaroons, coffee, tea and other drinks.

Shrove tuesday is located near Braddell MRT. It is approximately 5 minutes away from the MRT station. Alternatively you can also take BUS 232 from Toa Payoh Bus Interchange and alight opposite Braddell MRT Station, You just need to cross the road and walk across the flats.

Address: Block 94 Toa Payoh Lorong 4 #01-32 Singapore 310094
Opening Hours: Sunday - Thursday : 10am - 10pm
                             Friday & Saturday : 10am - 11pm

Anyways this time round i had waffles with Madagascar vanilla gelato, rainbow cake and chocolate molten lava cake.

The outer layer are charred with a visibly bitter taste with each bite into the waffle. Waffle was drizzled with chocolate and i feel that it brings out the bitter taste even more. As I take a bite into the waffle, I find that it lacks the fluffy texture that Sunday Folks produces, However, The Madagascar vanilla gelato was so good! I love it.

Rainbow cake was so photogenic but the taste is normal.

Didn't like the molten lava cake too. I don't usually eat chocolate cake and i find it too chocolaty for me.

REVIEW: Ramen Bar Suzuki (Toa Payoh)

Ramen fans in Toa Payoh should be happy that there's finally an AUTHENTIC ramen store here now! I was craving for ramen one day and I researched and discovered this gem! :)

Address: Blk 203 Toa Payoh North Singapore 310203
Opening Hours: 11am to 3pm, 5 to 9pm daily

Customers can choose from pure white, chilli, squid ink, emerald green and black pepper soup broth.
Pure white - Tonkotsu
Chilli -Spicy
Emerald Green - Basil with cheese
Black Pepper -Not very spicy

Soup is thick and flavorful enough - Just how I like it. Char siew needs improvement though as it is quite difficult to chew, Recommendation is to get the Pure white special because you get 4 char siew and 1 flavored egg for only $13.00. Would be nice if they can add dipping noodles to their menu.

REVIEW: The Little Prince Cafe

The Little Prince Cafe is a small ice cream cafe tucked at a corner in the Toa Payoh Neighborhood. As the name suggest, the cafe is themed according to this childhood classic story. The cafe is still relatively quiet perhaps because it is not near the mrt station and not accessible to the ready crowd.

Address: Lor 6 Toa Payoh Blk 47 #01-134 Singapore 310047
Opening hours: Sun-Mon, Wed-Thurs - 12pm – 10pm
                          Fri-Sat - 12pm – 11pm
                          Closed Tues

You can choose from coffee, their special drinks, savory waffles, sandwiches and waffle with gelato!

You can sit by the window, with a cup of hot coffee and browse through their Little prince books. (:

What is so unique about this place is also their hand drawn walls and floors.

Waffle with Earl Grey latte gelato. The waffle is more crispy than what you have outside. Charred to crisp outside and soft in the inside, though there is a slight bitter taste due to this. I particularly like it when i eat it with the ice cream.

Ham and cheese waffle. The ham is inside the waffle which is a surprise. Cheese is in between the waffle. How nice if there's melted cheese inside the waffle as well. haha. There's also cheese drizzled on the waffle.

Generous serving of Smoked Salmon atop the crispy waffle drizzled with Lots of cheese! This is a good choice as it is only $8.90.

REVIEW: Ramen Dining Keisuke Tokyo

This is the fifth store in Singapore for the Keisuke chain of ramen stores. Ramen Dining Keisuke Tokyo has since moved from its Parco location into its biggest venue yet at Suntec City in June 2014. What's so special about Chef Keisuke's store here is that each store has their own concept. Unlike the other stores, this store is more focused on 'dining' thus the contemporary setup and design.

Address: Suntec City, 9 Raffles Boulevard, Singapore 039596
It is above H&M at the second floor.
Opening Hours: Mon to Fri 11:30am - 15:00pm / 17:00pm - 22:00pm
Sat, Sun and Public Holiday 11:30am - 22:00pm

Their specialty here is the Crab stock ramen! I ordered the Crab stock ramen special. 3 pieces of char siew, flavored egg and bamboo shoots were added here. The crab stock is thick and flavorful but this taste is too 'new' to me. Maybe trying again will make me like this. Tonkotsu soup base is still my absolute favorite.

REVIEW: Lady M at Marina Square

After the disappointing lunch at Rider's cafe (Click to see how bad it is! ), we decided to go to Lady M at Marina square for some deserts! Lady M is originated from New York! They are well-known for their Mille crepe cakes. They have 3 outlets in Singapore. They are located at marina square shopping mall, orchard central and one Fullerton respectively. No need to go to New York to taste the awesome Mille crepe cakes already! We have it here in Singapore too.

Address: Marina Square Shopping Mall 6 Raffles Boulevard #02-103
Singapore 039594

Opening Hours: Daily 11am to 10pm

Check out the variety of cakes available at their store:

They even serve main dishes! I have yet to try them out though.

Decided not to drink coffee so ordered one of the tea. This one is peppermint tea. The tea is not bad as the taste is not too overpowering. You can add some sugar cubes if it is not sweet enough. I prefer my tea to be light though. :)

Green tea mille crepes.

Layers and layers of thin crepes sits atop of yummy pastry cream finishing with green tea powder coating the top of cake.

Gâteau aux Marrons

Almond flour cake enveloping a soft whipped cream center with dashes of chestnut infused cream and sugar coated roasted walnuts. Every bite into the cake gives you the awesome rich chest nutty flavor leaving you with the 'awwww' feeling. You will love this if you love chestnuts or almonds.

Signature Mille crepes.

This is kind of similar to the green tea crepe that i had. Crepe is layered with pastry cream with top caramelized to golden brown. This is kind of sweet though and not to my liking, probably due to the caramel.

All 3 cakes together!

REVIEW: Choupinette at Bukit Timah

Choupinette

Address: 607 Bukit Timah Rd, 269708

Opening Hours: Tue - Sat: 08:00 - 19:00
                          Sun: 09:00 - 18:00

I had a Saturday class and choupinette is near my school. The cafe is quite small and squeezy but gives off a cozy vibe. They not only sell main dishes but sell bread and cakes as well.

So here I am trying out their egg royals set. Their egg benedicts are poached perfectly and the toast at the bottom is crispy but not overly hard to chew. Only problem is their salmon is too thin! It's not salty though!

Their set menu consists of one main dish, one juice choice and coffee or tea. Wish they would be more generous with their salmon servings and it would be nicer if I can replace one drink choice with a desert. A nice cake would be a good compliment to the awesome egg Benedict. I guess I will be back since I will have Saturday classes often this current semester. :)
